How to read newsletters on a Kindle

Every Kindle has its own email address. Anything sent to it from an address you've approved shows up in your Kindle library, so reading a newsletter on a Kindle comes down to getting each issue to that address.

There are two ways to do it. You can forward each issue yourself, which is free. Or you can use a service that sends every new issue for you. We run one of those services, Serifize, which costs $36 a year for unlimited newsletters and is free for 3 a month. The steps for both are below.

First, find your Kindle's email address

Sign in to Amazon and open Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings. Each Kindle and Kindle app is listed with its own address ending in @kindle.com. In the same section is the Approved Personal Document E-mail List. Amazon ignores email from any address that isn't on it, without telling you.

If your Kindle is registered to a store outside the US, use that store (amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, amazon.es and so on). We keep direct links for every Amazon store.

Option 1: Forward each issue yourself (free)

  1. Add the email address you'll forward from to the Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
  2. When a newsletter arrives, forward it to your @kindle.com address.
  3. Sync your Kindle after a few minutes.

This works with any newsletter and costs nothing. The catch is that you do it for every issue, and Amazon converts the raw email. Buttons, unsubscribe footers and tracking images often come along with the article, and layouts with lots of images can break.

Option 2: Have every issue sent automatically

With Serifize, you get your own Serifize email address. Anything sent to it is turned into a Kindle ebook, with the newsletter's images and a cover page, and emailed to your Kindle. New issues usually show up within a few minutes.

  1. Sign up for Serifize and enter your @kindle.com address.
  2. Add your Serifize address to Amazon's Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
  3. Send newsletters to your Serifize address. For new subscriptions, sign up with the Serifize address instead of your own. For newsletters you already get, set up a Gmail or Outlook filter that forwards a copy.

This works for Substack, Beehiiv, Ghost, Kit, Buttondown, Mailchimp and anything else that arrives by email. If you mostly read Substack, our Substack guide covers paid subscriptions too.

Guides for specific newsletters

These include each newsletter's sending address and a Gmail search that matches only that newsletter.

What it costs

Forwarding by hand is free. Serifize is free for 3 newsletters a month, and unlimited is $4 a month or $36 a year. Other services charge between $47.88 and $100 a year for unlimited newsletters; we list them all, with links to their pricing, on our comparison page.

If nothing shows up on your Kindle

Check that the sending address is on the Approved Personal Document E-mail List, on the same Amazon store your Kindle is registered to. That's the most common cause. Next, check that the @kindle.com address belongs to the device you actually read on: a new or replaced Kindle gets a new address. The Docs tab in Manage Your Content and Devices lists everything Amazon received, even if it never reached your device.
